LGBTQ2S+ Identity, Inclusion and the Safe Space

About this workshop

Women SGEU members and women in the community are invited to a new SGEU Women Taking Action webinar. This 1-hour online session offers LGBTQ2S+ awareness and ally training.

Learn from Lisa DeVries who is passionate about sharing thoughts and information on everything that makes our Spaces Safer. During her presentation, she’ll share stories of her adventures, both coming out late in life and coming to terms of a progressing disease that makes for colorful moments and new understanding of what inclusion is, and what it could be, both in life and in the workplace. In her presentation, attendees will:

  • Consider gender identity and sexuality through history and culture.
  • Examine prejudice, assumptions and privilege.
  • Learn how to create welcoming, safe and inclusive environments for everyone.

About the speaker

Lisa DeVries (she/her, they/them) is is an able bodied, disabled, non-binary, lesbian. She’s the daughter of Dutch immigrants who chose to settle in Saskatoon over 60 years ago.

She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 19, which is something that has impacted every facet of her life. Just as her struggle with her sexuality was 'invisible', so was the reality of living with an incurable and debilitating disease at an early age.

Lisa is an SGEU Education Sector member working as a Student Engagement Coordinator at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

Diversity is a fact. Equity is a choice. Inclusion is an action. Belonging is an outcome.

About the Women's Committee

Our committee works to:

  • Examine all issues affecting women members in their union, work, home, and community lives.
  • Evaluate the Constitution and policies of SGEU and make recommendations to enable women to participate more fully in Union activities.
  • Liaise with other women's organizations locally, nationally, and internationally to offer necessary assistance to them and to promote women's trade union issues in those organizations.
