PRINCE ALBERT – The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union (SGEU) is condemning the closure of the bookstores at the Prince Albert and Moose Jaw campuses of the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Institute. SGEU represents the affected workers.

“The bookstore closures at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Moose Jaw and Prince Albert campuses do nothing to better the learning experience and working conditions at this post-secondary institution,” said SGEU President Tracey Sauer. “There is no justification for punishing students or workers for a failure to plan around the decrease in funding from international student enrolment.”

The closures are being blamed for a reduction in revenue from international student enrolment. Ten SGEU members are impacted by the closures.

“Our members are proud of the hard work they do to help students have the best educational experience,” said Deb Zawada-Wiebe, chair of the bargaining committee. “SGEU is working hard right now to try to reduce the impacts on our members and students.”
