DENARE BEACH – The Saskatchewan Government & General Employees’ Union (SGEU) has made a donation of $10,000 to the Denare Beach Volunteer Fire Service, presented by SGEU President Tracey Sauer. Along with several SGEU representatives, Sauer arrived in Denare Beach on Thursday to tour the area and met with the mayor of Denare Beach, Carl Lentowicz, as well as the Denare Beach Fire Crew. Their visit concluded with a dinner for the Fire Service volunteers and their families.
“SGEU is proud to stand behind the people who stand up for others—especially in times of crisis.” said Sauer. “When a community is hurting, or when first responders like those in Denare Beach are stretched to their limits, our members believe we all have a role to play.”
SGEU represents 250 Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency workers, including the workers fighting wildfires directly. The union also has members who have faced evacuation and lost property at Denare Beach and elsewhere in northern Saskatchewan. Sauer was accompanied by Vehicle, Equipment and Operations Component Chair George MacLeod, Public Service Sector Vice-President Justin Priel, First Vice-President Diane Ralph, Health Providers Bargaining Chair Tanya Schmidt, Health Providers Bargaining Vice Chair Sharri Laczko, and Indigenous Vice-President Hali Topinka.
“I’m sure the fire department will put it to very good use.” said Denare Beach Mayor Carl Lentowicz. “We appreciate it and thank [SGEU] for the service to make it happen. I hope [the union] can come up here when things are cleaned up.”
SGEU President Tracey Sauer will be available for interviews from SGEU’s Prince Albert office from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM on Friday either in person or by phone or video conference.
