Each year in April, approximately 200 SGEU members travel from every corner of the province to one meeting room. There, they spend three days making crucial decisions on behalf of their 20,000 fellow members.

They are delegates to the annual SGEU Convention. Convention is the ultimate decision-making event of our union.
For SGEU, Convention is a gathering of members who have been elected to represent their fellow members when the key decisions for their union are made. These members are called delegates. At conventions, they hear reports on what the union has achieved in the past year, decide on future actions and elect leadership.
Each sector receives one delegate per one hundred and fifty members, and they each have their own guidelines for electing delegates.
Proposed decisions at Convention are submitted in the form of resolutions crafted by SGEU’s committees, sectors and Provincial Council. Each resolution outlines a specific course of action or new rule for SGEU to take on. Every resolution is decided with a debate and a vote from all delegates.

Convention delegates also receive and vote on reports from committees and union leadership. Finally, they elect union leaders before the end of the convention.
There are also caucus meetings to attend. A caucus is a group or a meeting of people with something in common. At Convention, there are caucus meetings based on sectors and other criteria such as Human Rights and Equity. Delegates attend any caucus meeting that applies to them.
Being a delegate is a lot of work—but it’s fun, too! There are a lot of opportunities to meet fellow SGEU members and socialize, including at meals and social events.
If you’re interested in becoming a delegate to the 2026 Convention in Regina, please contact your sector or local chair for more information. The call for delegates typically goes out near the end of each year.
