National Ribbon Skirt Day is observed every year on January 4 to honour Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people, and to recognize the cultural significance of the ribbon skirt as a symbol of identity, resilience, and tradition. The day was officially designated by the federal government in 2022, following a 2020 incident in which Isabella Kulak, a young Indigenous girl from Kamsack, Saskatchewan, was shamed for wearing her ribbon skirt to school. This event sparked a nationwide movement of solidarity.
The ribbon skirt carries deep spiritual and cultural meaning, reflecting a connection to Mother Earth, sacred medicines, and generations of Indigenous knowledge. National Ribbon Skirt Day encourages all Canadians to learn and celebrate Indigenous cultures.
