May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ (MMIWG2S+) People, also known as Red Dress Day.
Violence against Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ people is a human rights crisis. Indigenous women are four times more likely than non-Indigenous women to be victims of violence, and they are twice as likely to experience violence from their current or former partner. In Saskatchewan, the homicide rate is 11 times higher for Indigenous women than non-Indigenous women.
It is up to all of us to take action to protect Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ community members. Here are some ways to get involved on May 5 and throughout the year:
A free, 24/7 MMIWG2S+ support line is available at 1-844-413-6649 for anyone who requires immediate support.
