SGEU President Bob Bymoen and the chair of the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) bargaining unit, Al Evans, will present a cheque for $2,500 to KIN Enterprises on Friday, December 18 at 10:30 a.m. in Prince Albert.

In June, SGEU partnered with its members at SCIC to purchase a steer for $6,000 at the annual Charity Steer held at the Prince Albert Exhibition 4-H Finished Beef Show and Sale. The steer was then sold to an abattoir for market value. SGEU and the unionized workers at SCIC have chosen to donate the proceeds from this sale to KIN Enterprises.

KIN Enterprises offers training opportunities and program activities to adults considered to have challenging abilities. Its programming promotes learning, strengthens independence, and enhances skills for employment within the community.

“We are pleased to support KIN Enterprises and the important work it does to enhance the quality of life for people living with disabilities,” said Bymoen.

“It was great fun participating in the Charity Steer, and we’re happy to support kids giving back to their communities,” he added.

Each year, one of the 4-H clubs in the Prince Albert region auctions off a steer that its members have raised and donates the money to an organization of their choice. The Charity Steer serves as an opportunity for young 4-H members, ranging in age from six to 21, to learn how to raise, feed, and care for their animals. It’s also an opportunity for them to learn about the importance of giving back. In total, $16,000 was raised by Weldon 4-H at this year’s auction for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan.

“A large population of SGEU’s membership has roots in rural Saskatchewan,” says Bymoen. “Many of our members at SCIC are farmers and work closely with farmers. We like to share in that and support the communities our members come from and live in.”

The presentation will take place at KIN Enterprises Rehabilitation Centre located at 300 15th Avenue E. in Prince Albert. All media are invited to attend.
