Community Service Bursary
The Community Service Bursary is a volunteer and service bursary established in partnership with SGEU to support and recognize individuals with a demonstrated commitment to Service—whether local, national, or international. Founded by a former SGEU member dedicated to a life of service, this bursary honours the impact of a life of service - both in uniform and as a civilian.
Service can take many forms: voluntary or compensated, civilian or uniformed, and includes—but is not limited to—acts such as community volunteering, military service, law enforcement, and humanitarian work.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must fall into one of the following categories:
- A dues-paying member of SGEU, from any category or branch.
- A spouse or dependent of a dues-paying SGEU member.
- An employee of SGEU (regardless of union affiliation).
- A spouse or dependent of an SGEU employee.
Educational Requirements
- Applicants must be enrolled in, or accepted into, a post-secondary institution such as a university, trade school, or business college in Saskatchewan, Alberta, or Manitoba.
Selection Criteria
The recipient will be selected based on:
- Demonstrated or Aspirational Service
- The applicant must submit one of the following:
- A short essay (max 800 words),
- A PowerPoint presentation, or
- A video (max 5 minutes)

The submission should describe:
- Their past history of service, and/or
- Their future plans for service and how their education will support those goals.
Examples of qualifying service include (but are not limited to):
- Volunteering with local shelters or community organizations,
- Military or police service (including veterans and reservists),
- Emergency response roles,
- Participation in humanitarian aid efforts (domestic or abroad).
- Commitment to Service-Oriented Education
- Preference may be given to those pursuing careers in service-related fields, such as:
- Health care
- Law enforcement
- Emergency services
- Social work
- Public administration
- Education

- Preference Considerations
Additional consideration will be given to applicants who:
- Are recognized as Veterans by the Government of Canada, including:
- Honourably released military personnel (who successfully completed basic training),
- Active members of the Primary Reserve Force or Canadian Rangers,
- Veterans of the RCMP, Coast Guard, or Saskatchewan municipal police forces.
- Are of Canadian First-Nations heritage, who chose to exercise the long-standing practice, and tradition of serving in the US military and returned to Canada after honourable service.
Award Amount
Four (4) $2500.00 bursaries are available. The bursaries will be distributed in 4 rounds.
